What Is an Angel?

Like spirit guides, angels are also available for guidance and protection, and they embody unconditional love, compassion, and wisdom. Some people say they have an angel as one of their spirit guides—which, given their characteristics, is entirely reasonable. Most spiritual traditions describe angels as messengers of God, full of His love and carrying His love to humans on earth. However, angels have never incarnated in human form, which separates them from spirit guides who have previously incarnated. There seems to be agreement among different heritages that there is a hierarchy of angels, organized by function.

We may talk to angels and pray to them—although typically they aren’t to be worshipped. Some belief systems suggest we all have a guardian angel whose primary job is to watch over us and protect us. You can probably think of some close calls you’ve had in your life when you were delivered from harm. Guardian angels keep us safe in situations like these and work through our intuition to guide us away from dangerous choices. Angels are interwoven in the culture of humans. Regardless of religion or belief system, stories of angels are a part of humans’ heritage and a piece of the fabric that makes up human history. References to angels often refer specifically to an archangel.
